Kiteboarding at Somerset Long Bay Beach

Locals know: As long as there's wind, there's a place to kiteboard in Bermuda. Because of its orientation, Somerset Long Bay Beach in Sandys Parish on the West End is an excellent place to go when winds on the island's east-facing beaches are less friendly. A quarter-mile stretch of beach lined by Bermuda's famously brilliant turquoise waters, Somerset Long Bay Beach is best for kitesboarding when the wind is blowing west to northeast.

Out on the water in Bermuda, it can often feel like you're riding the wind and waves of a secluded paradise you have all to yourself. That's especially the case at Somerset Long Bay, where the lack of other kiters on the beach made California-based visiting pro Laurel Eastman and her fellow pros she was travelling with feel like they were kiting along their own private shoreline – a rare phenomenon in the world of kiteboarding, Eastman said.

From the water, you'll see the lush woodlands of Somerset Long Bay Park & Nature Reserve and Daniel's Head Park as well as the pastel-hued homes and resorts that dot the green coastal hillside to the northeast.

Here we were the only ones at every single beach, so it was really like having our own private paradise to kiteboard in. – Laurel Eastman

The beach shares amenities with the park here, namely a restroom, but there is a grassy area where you can disassemble your kite without getting it too sandy – always a plus.

Local kiteboarder Jay Riihiluoma, owner of Flying Colours in Hamilton, said that because of the island's diverse topography and wind, visiting boarders will want to bring a variety of kites along – and to get in touch with the local kiting community ahead of time.

“Know what you’re getting yourself in for beforehand," Riihiluoma said. "Touch base with some of the local kiteboard community and bring a variety of kites because the conditions can be variable.”

Eastman was glad she did. On the day she launched at Somerset Long Bay, she said, wind conditions in that spot were lighter; bringing along her foil board made for a better time out on the water.

Somerset Long Bay isn't too far from the restaurants, bars, historic sites and shops of Royal Naval Dockyard. After a day out on the water, it's an excellent spot to grab a drink – and take in more of those amazing island views.
