More about our weather

To protect our island from traffic and pollution, rental cars are not available here. But island transport is easily arranged on taxi, bus, ferry, scooter or carriage ride. In Bermuda, getting around is half the fun.

Did you know

  • We drive on the left-hand side of the road just like in the UK
  • Our taxi drivers not only provide transport but some also give guided tours
  • Bus stop markers are pink for buses heading into the City of Hamilton and blue for those heading out of town

A truly Bermudian way to get around: motor scooters and pedal bikes are ideal for exploring our Island's winding streets and to stop in a lay-by to take in the ocean views.

Scooter riders and cyclists of all levels can make the most of our favourite modes of transport. Fear not, our speed limit is never set above 32kph / 20mph. Just remember, we drive on the left!

Motor Scooter requirements

Renting a scooter requires three things:
  • You must be at 18 years of age or older
  • You must wear a helmet
  • You must drive on the left-hand side of the road

The cycle liveries are happy to provide a delivery and pick-up service at your hotel.

On your bike!

We love our pedal bikes. Our many long, twisting roads make cycling our Island particularly rewarding. Just remember, if you ask to rent a "bike" or "bicycle", most Bermudians will assume you want a motor scooter, because we call them "pedal bikes"!

Rentals range between US$30 and $35 per day.

Along with getting you to your destination, many taxi drivers are excellent tour guides, eager to share stories behind our landmarks and customs-just ask.

Taxis can usually be found outside our larger hotels, near the airport or on the streets of the City of Hamilton or the Town of St. George. Raise your hand to hail one, and off you go!

  • All taxis are metered at government-set rates
  • Current taxi fares are US$6.40 for the first mile for 1 - 4 passenger taxi and US$2.00 each additional mile, or US$8.00 for the first mile for 5 - 6 passenger taxi and US$2.50 for each additional mile, for travel between 6:00 a.m. and midnight.
  • Fares are 25 percent higher between midnight and 6:00 a.m., all day on Sunday and on public holidays
  • The sightseeing rate for this service is US$40.00/hour for 1 - 4 passenger taxi, or US$55.50 for 5 - 6 passenger taxi.

Frequently used taxi operators on our island include:

Island Transportation Pass

If you do not want to fuss with exact change, take advantage of the Transportation Pass, available for one, three and seven days of unlimited use on our buses and ferries. Passes are sold at the Central Terminal, the Visitors' Service Bureau in Hamilton and at other authorised outlets.

For a complete bus and ferry schedule, please visit: www.gov.bm

Our island's buses are frequent, plentiful and service most areas of interest. You cannot miss them, as they are painted pink with blue stripes.

With 11 bus routes and 14 bus zones, each one covering about 2MI / 3.2KM, we have the entire island covered. Most buses leave from the Central Terminal on Washington Street, next to our City Hall in Hamilton.

  • Bus passengers must have exact change in coins. Ask about bus tokens or books of bus tickets at your hotel or the bus terminal
  • During the morning and evening commute, our buses are packed with locals. It is best to plan your trip during a less busy time of day
  • To find a bus stop, look for a pole with a pink top (for rides inbound to Hamilton), or a blue top (for rides outbound of Hamilton)

Four public ferry routes offer a picturesque alternative for travel around our island.

All ferries depart from the Ferry Terminal on Front Street in Hamilton. Cash is not accepted, so be sure to have your transportation pass, ticket or token in hand.

  • The blue route stops at the Royal Naval Dockyard, Watford Bridge and Cavello Bay, all in Sandys Parish on the west end of our island
  • The pink route makes several stops in Paget and Warwick Parishes
  • The green route stops at Rockaway in Southampton Parish and Somerset Bridge in Sandys Parish
  • The orange route only operates in the summers, and it stops at the Royal Naval Dockyard before continuing on to the Town of St. George
  • For complete route, schedule and fare information, visit the Bermuda ferry website

For a short, relaxing excursion on our island, a horse-drawn carriage ride is ideal. Popular trips? A circular route west of the City of Hamilton; a ride through history in the Town of St. George or the Royal Naval Dockyard; a spectacular ride along South Road

From April until October, you will find available carriages congregated conveniently along Front Street in the City of Hamilton, as well as in the Royal Naval Dockyard and the Town of St. George. Carriages are hired by the half hour, or longer as contracted.

Carriages pulled by one horse can carry up to four passengers. But in some cases, two horses may draw a carriage. These carriages will accommodate a larger group for an additional surcharge.
