The "Jewel of the Atlantic," Bermuda is much closer than you think--less than 7 hours away from the UK. With our incomparable weather, pink sand beaches, breadth of historic sites and warm, friendly people, it's no wonder Condé Nast Traveler readers have voted Bermuda "Best island in the Caribbean/Atlantic" 17 times since 1994.

Vegetation & Wildlife

Flora

At any time of year, lush greenery covers our hillsides, sprinkled with bursts of colour. Our blossoming flora provides a picture-perfect backdrop to every Bermuda retreat.

  • Bermudians are known around the world as "Onions." Our island soil produced especially savoury onions that were in huge demand
  • Our gardens range from large, formal estates to miniature jungles or simple vegetable plots
  • Our flowering plants come in all colours, but purple bougainvillea is especially popular
  • Local farmers grow and sell fruits and vegetables at roadside stands
  • Native trees have been used for both house construction and high fashion

Fauna

Serenading tree frogs, endangered sea turtles, 350 types of birds, 650 species of fish - our island hosts a bevy of beasts. Few can resist our delightfully temperate conditions and stunningly clean waters.

  • The white-tailed tropicbird, the Longtail, is a frequent visitor here and appears on the Bermuda twenty-five cent coin
  • Of the seven sea turtle species recognized in the world, our waters host five of them
  • Our tree frogs sing whenever the temperature is over 21°C / 70°F – which, of course, is most of the time
  • Our impressive number of shipwrecks make ideal habitats for fish and other marine species
